North Carolina Wine TV Review:
While the grapes for the Biltmore Estate Century Red Wine were not grown in North Carolina, the wine was made in state at the famous Biltmore Estate Winery. The winery pitches its Century wines as being food friendly. We can attest that it does go well with pizza. This blended red wine is full bodied and blends the taste of cherry and fruit well with its oak treatment. At 14.2% the alcohol level feels high and delivers some heat on the finish alongside some firm tannins. The finish is brief, but satisfying. For its faults this wine does taste good, but its flavor is improved by food. For $11.50 this is a fair value and would recommend serving with heavier meals such as pasta or pizza.

About Biltmore Estate Century Red Wine (from the winery):
This medium-body, fruity blend containing Sangiovese and Merlot features aromas of red currant and strawberry.
About Biltmore Estate (from the winery):
The most visited winery in the United States isn’t located in Napa Valley. It’s at Biltmore in the mountains of North Carolina, where approximately 1 million visitors stop by to sample award-winning estate wines each year. The first vineyards at Biltmore were established in 1971 in an area below Biltmore House. French-American hybrids were planted initially, with vinifera plantings following in a few years. Inspired after several years of experimenting, William A.V. Cecil, then president and owner of Biltmore, decided that a winery was the natural outcome of ongoing research and a logical extension of his grandfather’s intention that the estate be self-supporting.

I like the idea of tasting wine with food…especially pizza, something everyone can relate to. In my opinion pizza needs a relatively substantial wine and it sounds like this one was capable of standing up to all the grease and cheese. I have not had Biltmore’s Century line of wines, so I will add this one to my list of “must trys,” along with a couple of the others you guys have tasted.
I like the “here’s to the old north state”…i do think you need some sort of tag line!
