Episode 10: Black Wolf Vineyards 2005 Chardonnay

Note: Black Wolf Vineyards is currently closed though their wine is available in many stores.

North Carolina Wine TV Review:
Black Wolf Vineyards 2005 Chardonnay suffers from two key flaws. The first is that it has aged too long and has lost some of its fruit, the second is that it has a large amount of oak present that overrides much of the crispness of this wine. However the nose is very nice with lots of lemon, apple and toasted coconut. It also has a nice mouth feel with nice bits of lemons when it first hits your tongue, however, from there the wine falls apart into a brief and oaky finish that really lacks the acidity it needs to be a solid effort.

Price: $10

Availability: Winery is closed but can be found at Total Wine and other NC wine stores.

Rating: ★★½☆☆

Sad to hear about Black Wolf. We visited the vineyard and ate dinner at their restaurant back in 2005. The vineyard and main ‘house’ sat way off the road, with some magnificent views. We sat and sipped some of their red wine while we waited for our table (we’d come early to do just that). Can’t say the wine was spectacular then either, but as I’ve said before, drinking the wine ‘on site’ adds points (bottles) to the wine.

Sad news…maybe they can just ditch the restaurant and concentrate on one vision? and come back??

    Thanks again for your blog

  2. Bummer that Blackwolf closed…kind of surprising that it’s wine is still available at Total Wine. I’m always a bit suspicious of wines sitting on shelves for several years because you have no real way to know if they suffered any damage as a result unless there is an obvious flaw such as cork leakage. Sounds like this one has lost its luster though so I guess I won’t worry about it!
