Episode 42 Food Friday: Scallops and Shelton Vineyards Riesling

Today, we start something a little different on North Carolina Wine TV’s food Friday. We are starting a four part food Friday series that will air over the next four weeks. Kipp and Jeff created a North Carolina wine diner that has four courses of food each paired with a different North Carolina wine. Each week food Friday will feature a different course.

It all starts today with some bay scallops, paired with the Shelton Vineyards 2008 Riesling. Can the win hold up to the richness or the scallops? Watch today’s video to find out!

Watch this behind the scenes video of Jeff preparing scallops for the first course of the North Carolina Wine TV wine and food pairing dinner.

    Jeff & Kipp,

I cringed when you announced that you were pairing our Riesling with scallops. I knew in advance that that particular pairing would not show the food or wine at its’ best. Our Sauvignon Blanc would have worked very much better. Riesling typically should be paired with spicy Asian foods or the classic pairing with Pate. This was a good example of how bad pairings don’t work for either the food or wine. Give the winery a call next time about what works best with their wines and you will have better success with the pairings. As always, thanks for your support of our industry.

    George:

Thanks for the comment. Our food pairings are just like our wine tastings. We are helping people learn what kinds of foods go with what types of wines. One of our viewers also commented on Twitter that spicy Chinese food goes well with Riesling. I hope you watched the Facebook video where I cooked the scallops. I have new respect for cooking show hosts. It is harder than you might think.

    Jeff,

Just watched your cooking video on Facebook. Nice job! Now I’m hungry but I will pair my scallops with Sauvignon Blanc.
I really liked the cooking segment.

Thanks again George. We have other cooking videos coming with the next course in our Food Friday meal.

  6. Redbullseye says:

I have to agree with George on this one. Give me a Sauvignon Blanc or even Pinot G. with scallops. Hey George, I have paired your Shelton with some Hot Wings and it went great together. Works good with the spicey Asian Zing Wing Sauce from BW3s!

  7. George Denka says:

    Redbulleye,

I have also tried our Riesling with Hot Wings and the sweetness of the wine balances out the spicyness of the wings. I haven’t tried the Asian Zing Sauce yet but will seek it out. Thanks for the support!
