Episode 41: Shelton Vineyards 2008 Yadkin Valley Riesling

North Carolina Wine TV Review:
The Yadkin Valley Riesling is the most popular out of all the wines Shelton Vineyards produces. This Riesling has 3% Viognier which makes the nose of the wine slightly tropical. It smells of pineapple, peaches, dried apricots, with a hint of sugar. In the mouth the fruit is still very apparent with a clean slightly sweet finish. For our tastes we would have like to see a little more mineral flavors which really help take the Riesling to the next level. This is a solid wine and a fair value at $14, probably ideal for someone looking to make the transition from sweet wines to dry wines as it sits firmly between the two.

Rating: ★★★½☆

Price: $14

Availability: Directly from the winery and in many wine shops and grocery stores in North Carolina.

About Shelton vineyards 2008 Yadkin Valley Riesling (from the winery):
A lovely floral and fruity Riesling with subtle hints of apricot, honey, apple and peach. Well-balanced alcohol and acidity provide the structural backbone and a clean, crisp finish. Excellent with spicy dishes.

About Shelton Vineyards (from the winery)
On the estate, several varieties of grapes are grown. A few of those are Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Malbec, Tannat, Petit Verdot, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Viognier. Virtually all vitis vinifera wine producing grapes are of European ancestry. Interestingly, all varieties of vitis vinifera grown at Shelton Vineyards–and throughout the world for that matter–utilize bud wood of European origin grafted onto Native American rootstocks to create a more disease resistant vine.

Shelton Vineyards’ belief is that fine wine begins in the vineyard. The location, in the heart of North Carolina’s Yadkin Valley, provides the ideal climate and soil conditions. Shelton Vineyards’ commitment to sustainable farming practices and hands-on attention enables the vineyard to produce the highest possible quality of grapes. The Shelton Vineyards’ wines are reflective of the terroir of the Yadkin Valley. Along with expert winemaking techniques, enhancing what our land has given us, Shelton Vineyards has produced many award-winning wines.

In my opinion Riesling and other Alsace-like wines are the answer to the question, “What goes well with Chinese food?”
