Episode 92: Surry Cellars 2008 Chardonel

North Carolina Wine TV Review:
Today’s wine is different. While it was produced in North Carolina, it wasn’t made by a winery. Instead it was made by students in the Viticultural Degree Program at Surry Community College.

Now onto the wine! The Surry Cellars 2008 Chardonel is great on the nose with apples dipped in honey and a vanilla custard scent. A little bit of heat in the mouth but otherwise, this is a very well made wine with notes a granny smith apple and fresh cut grass. Overall this is a great spring and summer white wine and a good example of chardonel for those who haven’t had this hybrid grape before.

Rating: ★★★½☆

  1. Please correct the spelling of Surry. There is no “e” in Surrey.

    Thanks!

thanks for another great show. thought, with the accolades you might rate this wine higher…

  4. Thanks for the comment, Beth. I think this is a matter of expectations. We don’t try every bottle as a blank slate, but even before the first sip we approach each wine based on other North Carolina wines we have had. This was a very solid wine, much better than we were expecting, and in the end, the rating reflects that wine, not our expectations.
