Episode 111: RayLen 2007 Category 5

The RayLen Category 5 is made from five grape varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot. This wine was recommended to us by many fans of North Carolina wine, and since it is a 2007, we had high hopes. The nose is a jammy fruit bomb. It is filled with strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, cherry, cranberry, along with a bit of earth, spice and a vegetable note. This blend has a deep red color. It tastes like a big, jammy red wine, but the body of this dry red is a bit thin at the front. The Cabernet Franc dominates the flavor with green bean and green pepper, while the Syrah adds some black pepper. The wine is slightly oaky with rounded tannins and a cocoa, coffee finish. This is a very complex North Carolina, as the five grapes swirl around each on the nose and in the mouth causing this wine to keep changing. It is one to try if you can swing the 20 bucks.

About: 2007 Category 5 (from the winery)
This full-bodied Cabernet blend is fruit-forward with concentrated layers of cassis and fig. It finishes with smooth, caramelized vanilla notes and serves best with a nice cut of beef or venison. Named after the most powerful hurricane, this wine pairs well with people who live in a coastal town.

About RayLen Vineyards: (from the winery)
Joe and Joyce Neely were inspired by a trip to Italy to open a winery in North Carolina – no easy task less than ten years ago. RayLen produced its first wines in 2000 and opened its doors for business in 2001 with the completion of the Tasting Room. RayLen Vineyards & Winery became a bonded winery in April of 2001 when only four other wineries in the Yadkin Valley existed.

I love this wine, it’s one of my favorite reds! I have seen it for 16 or 17 dollars in Winston Salem.

  2. Dilla says:

I love this wine too. Very complex.

  3. Jessica / Dilla:

Thanks for the comments. This is definitely a complex wine. Cool that it is a bit cheaper in W-S.

  4. Russell Wood says:

2007 Category 5 was not one of my favorites. The nose and the palate are all over the place causing confusion. Not much value in the wine but a good mouth feel and the finish was nice but overall not the best Raylen has to offer. Try their Cab Sav’s they are great!

BTW these two guys look like they are tasting in a dorm room. Guys find a more inspiring place to video!
