Episode 108: Rockhouse Vineyards 2007 Cabernet Franc

North Carolina Wine TV Review
The Rockhouse Vineyards 2007 Cabernet Franc is another North Carolina red wine from the hot, dry summer of 2007. The nose has the characteristic smells of Cabernet Franc of green peppers, asparagus and green beans, along with some spicy tomato, woodsiness and rosemary. This big and bright, clean nose changes as the wine opens up. The flavors of this very dry wine follow the nose with vegetables, green pepper and tomatoes. There is also spicy pepper flavor. This rich, bold and complex wine has good body, which is representative of the vintage. It has a smooth finish of dark chocolate and coffee flavors, but there is a bit too much oakiness in the finish. You may want to try this wine as an example of 2007 North Carolina boldness.

About Rockhouse Cabernet Franc (not 2007) (from the winery):
The 2006 Rockhouse Cabernet Franc demonstrates rich color and concentration with a nicely textured finish. The ripe, peppery fruit combines with plum flavors and subtle tannin levels. The wine was bottled without filtering.

About Rockhouse Vineyards (from the winery):
The first Rockhouse vines were planted in 1991 on a 200-acre farm owned by Lee Griffin and Marsha Cassedy. The initial plantings were a mixture of both vinifera and French-American hybrid vines. Soon, however, Rockhouse began to concentrate exclusively on vinifera grapes. By 1996, there were four acres of Chardonnay planted, with smaller quantities of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Rockhouse Vineyards was bonded as a North Carolina winery in September of 1998. In 1999, the vineyard was expanded, with 3-1/2 acres planted to Viognier and 3-1/2 acres planted to Cabernet Franc. Total Rockhouse acreage stands at 10 acres of producing grapes.

  1. Rockhouse Vineyards and vintner Lee Griffin “ROCK”! Lee is making some of the best wine coming out of North Carolina these days. What’s so amazing is that he makes himself so accessible to his customers. Harkens back to Napa Valley in the 70’s.
